Top institutions in federal research-and-development expenditures

Wayne State University is ranked 76th among the nation's top academic research institutions, according to a National Science Foundation report. The data, provided from 2003, reflected the final year of a Congressional drive to double spending at the National Institutes of Health over five years. Total federal appropriations for research since 2003 have continued to rise, but much more slowly.
